Internships and mentoring to motivate disadvantaged Dutch teenagers at school

The issue

In the Netherlands, children are split between academic and vocational learning routes at around the age of 12. In recent years there has been a high level of school drop-outs among students on the vocational learning track, particularly among those from disadvantaged, inner city communities. This is often because the students concerned have little idea of the future career opportunities open to them. Consequently, they do not appreciate the importance of continuing their education towards their final degree or diploma. Some stakeholders have also felt that vocational education must be better matched to employers’ requirements.

The response

Champs on Stage (translated best as ‘internship champs’) is a professionally organised internship and career coaching programme. It targets disadvantaged Dutch 14-16 year olds from Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Den Haag who are on the vocational learning track at school.

The programme uses internships to motivate students at school. By introducing them to the practical realities of work, internships give them a greater understanding of their own future job prospects. They also allow students to see how their school learning can be applied in the job market; where their own skills and talents might best be directed; and why learning and qualifications are important.

During their internships, students are supported by mentors who can open their eyes to the talents and skills they already possess; help them identify the jobs for which these are best suited; and encourage them to take responsibility for these important decisions.

The programme also benefits the participating schools and businesses. The schools end up with more motivated students, closer links to companies, a better understanding of the local job market and higher quality internships. Meanwhile, participating companies gain publicity, a greater familiarity with their future workforce and relevant training for any employee who signs up as a mentor.

The organisation

Champs on Stage was first set up by the American Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands (AmCham), before being further developed by McKinsey & Co and Randstad, the recruitment consultancy. It is now an independent Dutch charity and, during 2010/11, is working with more than 1,200 teenagers from 14 schools.

The programme is unique insofar that it is the first large-scale project in the Netherlands to combine local activity with national organisation and connect student mentoring and internships with formal, long term school-business co-operation. It is also the first to be professionally managed and include training for both mentors and students.

The funding

Sofronie has made a grant of €60,000 for the three year period 2010-2013. This will fund internships for around 50 young people each year, covering costs including professional support workers, mentor training and co-ordinating internships with the participating schools.
