Hope and Homes for Children is a UK registered charity based in Wiltshire which operates in Central and Eastern Europe and Africa. Sofronie Foundation supports HHC’s de-institutionalisation programme for children’s orphanages in Eastern Europe. HHC have developed a unique model for closing the institutions which has been recognised by international experts, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation as best practice in the field. After careful assessment of each child and working closely with local authorities, HHC find a new home for every child in the institution. This is done in a variety of ways involving reintegration with their original birth family, adoption, fostering or a move to a small family style home established by HHC.Sofronie Foundation co-funded the closure of the Abrud institution in Alba County. This represented the 5th and final institution closure for Alba County and makes Alba County the first county in Romania to close all its children’s institutions. The closure took place on September 26th 2008 and a total of 60 children now have new homes and a better life to which to look forward.Sofronie Foundation is co-funding the closure of a second institution in the town of Comanesti, Bacau County, Romania. Closure is expected in September 2009. 133 children will benefit from this closure and importantly each institution closure means that no more children can be placed in it.There are still over a million children living in institutions in Central and Eastern Europe.
